BA THESIS COLLECTION (2019/20)
KAROSHI
My BA THESIS COLLECTION (at Fashion Design Institut, Düsseldorf, Germany - 2019/20) consists of eight looks and was inspired by my personal experiences and insights into Japan’s work culture I gathered during the time I spent working as a fashion designer and patternmaker in Tokyo in 2019.
The term “KAROSHI” is Japanese and describes occupational sudden mortality. More explicitly, it can be literally translated as “death by overwork”.
Karoshi involves employees committing suicide or sufferning from heart failures or strokes due to stress, long working hours, and sleep deprivation. This circumstance is a terrible indicator for their intense work attitude and an immeasurable loyalty towards their jobs.
This collection aims to freeing Japanese workers from the pressure to fit norms and standards expected by society. It symbolizes the urgent need to break free of constraints and to allow them the freedom to express their individuality - to break out of a perfectly fitted suit, to allow imperfection, asymmetry and creativity.
